Press Release
Date: Tuesday, June 17th, 2008
For Immediate Release
(Vancouver, BC) – Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) leaders are busy preparing this week for the first ever Métis Nation forum on Métis children and family services in British Columbia. The forum has been scheduled from June 20th to 21st, 2008 at the Vancouver Marriott Airport Hotel located in Richmond, BC. Provincial Minister of Children and Family Development Honourable Tom Christensen will be one of the guest dignitaries to welcome Métis Nation identified delegates from across the Province. MNBC has invited over 80 Métis Nation delegates to participate in this important forum.Métis Nation delegates will review the current state of Métis children and family development and address the existing delivery of Métis children and family services in relation to the Provincial Government strategy in British Columbia. The objective of the forum is for Métis community leaders, MNBC Board of Directors, and current Métis service providers to openly discuss the current services and consider a new Métis Nation strategy that represents Métis community needs and service delivery issues in the area of Métis children and family services. The forum will be independently facilitated and delegates will seek to provide direction to Métis Nation leaders.
MNBC President Dumont stated, “this forum is very important for the Métis Nation. There has been continued frustration and challenges expressed regarding current Métis children and family services to our communities. MNBC leadership has decided it is time to review the entire process and decide how the Métis Nation can move forward to ensure services recognize appropriate Métis Nation citizenship and Métis cultural support processes.”
MNBC Minister Responsible for Métis Children and Family Services Gerry Legare added, “I have recently been appointed the new MNBC Minister Responsible for Métis Children and Family Services and believe it is time for a new beginning. I will encourage forum delegates to discuss our future vision in an open manner. I am prepared to present a new vision that the Métis Nation believes will better support our Métis families.”
MNBC has organized an observer gallery for the public to view these important deliberations. MNBC has also scheduled a forum Press Conference at the hotel in the Coastal Ballroom upon completion of the deliberations Saturday at 4:30 PM (based on the scheduled completion of the Forum).
