More Lower Mainland Schools Showing Improved Scores on Fraser Institute Report Card on BC and Yukon Secondary Schools
Vancouver, BC – The Lower Mainland has the highest number of secondary schools with improved rankings in the Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia and Yukon: 2007 Edition, released today by independent research organization The Fraser Institute.
Of the 24 schools enjoying significant improvement in their overall ratings over the last five years, 13 are found in the Lower Mainland. The Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island each claim four improving schools, and three are located in the Interior and Northern BC region.
The – Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia and Yukon: 2007 Edition rates 291 public and private secondary schools from across British Columbia using nine key indicators of school performance. The indicators are based on student results data provided by the BC Ministry of Education.Secondary schools in the Yukon follow, for the most part, British Columbia’s curriculum and their students participate in provincial exams administered by BC’s Ministry of Education.
This annual report card compiles data from these indicators into easily read tables that allow anyone to analyze and compare the performance of individual schools. Parents consult the report card when they are choosing a school and use it as an annual audit of how their children’s school is doing academically.
The numbers also show that the Lower Mainland has a greater share of improving schools than it does of the total number of schools. While the Lower Mainland accounts for just 36 per cent of all secondary schools ranked in the report card, it has 54 per cent of the improving schools. The Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island with 23 per cent and 20 per cent of the total respectively, each accounted for only 17 per cent of the improving schools. The Interior and Northern BC with 18 per cent of all schools contributed just 12 per cent of the improving schools.
“Unlike a simple snapshot, the report card shows parents and educators how each school has done in academics over a number of years, allowing them to judge the school’s ongoing performance.” said Peter Cowley, the Institute’s Director of School Performance Studies and co-author of the report card.
“Seeing how other schools have improved and what they have accomplished can make a useful contribution to each school’s efforts at on-going improvement.”
