Brenda Quenneville says the issue of sexual violence has been riding a “big wave of awareness” in the last two years, thanks to the media attention being paid to accusations against high profile people like Jian Ghomeshi and Bill Cosby.

“It’s on everyone’s radar,” says the executive director of Amelia Rising, Nipissing’s sexual assault centre, who suspects it’s one reason behind an increase in the number of women coming into the centre to report assaults.

Amelia Rising offers a 24-hour crisis line in addition to individual and group counselling and workshops for the survivors of sexual assault.
