Morning Brief: Conservative Party suspends leadership campaign – iPolitics

Good morning, readers.
The Conservative Party of Canada announced late Thursday that it would be suspending its leadership campaign because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The party shared the decision made by its leadership election organizing committee on Twitter, saying it “is no longer possible to meet the deadlines necessary to process memberships and donations, or print, process and count ballots in time for a June 27 announcement” because of the closures of non-essential businesses in Ontario and Quebec. Both of the leadership campaign’s April debates have been cancelled and the deadline to purchase party membership has been bumped back to May 15.
The party said its leadership election organizing committee will reassess a timeline on May 1.
Earlier last night, leadership frontrunner Peter MacKay appeared on two of Canada’s most popular political television shows where he was forced to defend his stance on the then unmoved-election date. He had repeatedly said it shouldn’t be changed, despite it being unclear if the country will have overcome the worst of the global COVID-19 pandemic by what had been the scheduled election date.
