Morning Brief: Ontario Liberals retain two Ottawa seats in byelections – iPolitics

The Ontario Liberals retained two of their traditional strongholds in byelections in Ottawa on Thursday.

Voters in Ottawa-Vanier elected lawyer and longtime school board trustee Lucille Collard as their MPP, while councillor Stephen Blais won the byelection in Orleans.

The victories bring the Liberals’ total number of seats at Queen’s Park to eight, which under the pre-Ford formula would have been enough MPPs to grant the party official party status.

Chinese authorities have allowed two detained Canadians to speak with lawyers in recent months, the Globe and Mail reported yesterday — sourcing the knowledge to “a person with knowledge of the situation” — though such meetings have since been suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak. For 12 months after their arrests and detentions, both Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were denied access to legal representation.
