TORONTO, April 24 – Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (western Canada) and Astral Media’s The Movie Network (eastern Canada) present HBO Films’ Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, premiering day-and-date with HBO Sunday, May 27 at 7 p.m. PT on Movie Central (MC3) and 9 p.m. ET on The Movie Network. Based on Dee Brown’s 1971 best-seller that sold almost four million copies, this story explores the economic, political and social pressures that underpinned the opening of the American West and the tragic impact its expansion had on American Indian culture during the latter half of the 19th century. Through the perspectives of three main characters Charles Eastman, Sitting Bull and Senator Henry Dawes, this film recounts the heartbreaking demise of a proud race, brought on by politicians, soldiers and citizens who colonized the West.
During the opening of the American West in the latter part of the 19th century, schoolteacher Elaine Goodale Eastman (Anna Paquin) is working to improve life on a reservation, joined by Sioux doctor Ohiyesa (Adam Beach), who has been forced to take an English name – Charles – as “proof” of the virtues of assimilation. Meanwhile, in Washington, Senator Dawes (Aidan Quinn) lobbies against the antagonistic stance of the military towards Indians. But hopes for a promising future end after the 1890 assassination of Lakota chief Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg) and the subsequent massacre of hundreds of Native men, women and children by the Seventh Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek.
With a roster of well known talent in front of and behind the camera, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is directed by noted Canadian talent Yves Simoneau (Napoléon, Perfectly Normal), and stars Aidan Quinn (Empire Falls), and features Canadian cast members Anna Paquin (The Piano), Adam Beach (Flags Of Our Fathers), Colm Feore (Bon Cop, Bad Cop) and August Schellenberg (Eight Below). The film also stars J.K. Simmons (Oz), Wes Studi (Comanche Moon), and Fred Thompson (Law & Order). The epic adaptation was executive produced by Tom Thayer and Dick Wolf (Law & Order) and was filmed in and around Calgary, Alberta.
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee will be available on Movie Central On Demand and The Movie Network OnDemand the Tuesday following its network premiere, and will be simulcast on Movie Central and The Movie Network’s high definition channels.
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee will repeat on Movie Central’s MC1 Wednesday, May 30 at 8 p.m. PT.
