NAN Celebrates National Aboriginal Day
June 21, 2012
Thunder Bay, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) is joining First Nation, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada today in celebrating National Aboriginal Day, a day proclaimed in June 1996 by the Governor General of Canada to celebrate Aboriginal culture and diversity while recognizing the contributions Aboriginal peoples have made towards shaping Canada.
“This is a day where Aboriginal people from across Canada celebrate who we are as a culture and promote diversity amongst our community,” said NAN Grand Chief Stan Beardy who will be taking part at opening ceremonies. “This is a time to celebrate our accomplishments and the richness of our culture. ”NAN along with other organizations and institutions are part of the National Aboriginal Day Committee of Thunder Bay which organized events at the Marina Park in Thunder Bay all day long. People will gather to celebrate and share with dance, song and theatrical performances both contemporary and traditional and feast together as a community.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation is a political territorial organization representing 49 First Nation communities in James Bay Treaty No. 9 and Ontario portions of Treaty No. 5 – an area covering two thirds of the province of Ontario in Canada.
