NAN Response to Ford government’s Cuts to Youth Advocacy

THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Walter Naveau has decried the Ford government’s decision to slash much-needed advocacy for youth by eliminating the office of the Ontario Child Advocate, as outlined in the government of Ontario’s economic outlook:

“The office of the Ontario Child Advocate provides vital and much-needed support for youth across the province, especially for those in care. The Provincial Advocate’s office is a powerful voice for youth across Ontario and provides essential safeguards to some of the most vulnerable members of society. They were instrumental in working with NAN First Nations to elevate the recommendations from the Seven Youth Inquest, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and, more recently, the Report of the Expert Panel of the Deaths of Children and Youth in Residential Placements. It is shameful that the Premier is touting extended hours for the sale of alcohol while dismantling supports for our children. We strongly urge this government to reverse this ill-advised decision and fully endorse the tremendous work of the Child Advocate’s office.

The Ontario Child Advocate has supported NAN First Nations through several key initiatives including the Feathers of Hope youth-led initiative to facilitate dialogue between youth and First Nation leadership and government, their involvement in the Seven Youth Inquest, and their commitment to reforming child welfare.
