NAPS Investigates Bear Deaths in Kashechewan First Nation

(Thunder Bay, ON) On July 18, 2016, members of the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service Kashechewan Detachment were notified of a bear complaint.

Investigation revealed that a black bear had been killed, declawed and left in the open at the local waste site. Police worked closely with the local leadership, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). The subject that killed the bear was identified. This matter is still under investigation.

On July 18, 2016, police were notified of a polar bear that was loose in the community of Kashechewan. Again, police and local leadership consulted with the MNRF. Efforts were made to redirect the polar bear away from the community. On July 19, 2016, the polar bear was dispatched by the police for the safety of the community.

Nishnawbe-Aski Police would like to remind the citizens of the communities that NAPS serves to report all animal nuisance and injured animals to their local police.

Kashechewan First Nation is located approximately 500 km northwest of Timmins, Ontario.
