National Indigenous Peoples Day 2018
On June 11, 2018, Southlake celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day in collaboration with the Nin Os Kom Tin Native Cultural Friendship Centre of York Region.
We heard wonderful stories from Nora, an Elder, about the history and culture of the Indigenous People. We were treated to a beautiful drumming session and proceeded to participate in a smudging ceremony in the Healing Garden at the Stronach Cancer Centre.
This was a great opportunity to learn about Indigenous histories, cultures and the diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, while also supporting efforts to build productive relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
