National Native American 5K Championships in Albuquerque – Weekend of Gathering of Nations Pow Wow

Albuquerque, NM – The Native American Sports Council’s – Sports Warrior Track Club is conducting the first annual Native American 5,000-meter run “National Championships” to be held in Albuquerque, NM on Sunday April 27, 2008. This event will serve as a national Native American Championships and will require participants to provide proof of Native American tribal membership.There will be four age divisions for this year’s championship event consisting of male and female youth, grades 8th and under, Young Adult, grades 9th – 12th, Adults; Out of high school, and Masters, those over 40 years of age. Awards go 10 deep in each division and the overall winners of each division will receive special awards and the distinction of being the Native American National Champion.

Other events, which require no tribal membership, include non-competitive fitness 1 and 2 mile walks and a 400-meter toddler and youth dash. Additional competitive events included a Community 5,000-meter run with age divisions, 12 & under, 13-16; 17-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; and 60 & up, and a youth focused 1,000 meter with age divisions, 8 – under; 9 – 10; and 11-12. Awards are given to the top 5 male and female finishers.

The events start with the fitness walks at 8:00 am, 8:30 1K youth races, 8:50 400-meter toddler and youth dash, and 9:00 the Native American and Open Community 5K runs. The race will be held at the Volcano Vista High School, located on Albuquerque’s Westside, 8100 Rainbow Blvd., NW.

Proceeds go to support the NASC’s Sports Warriors Track Club, a program that provides assistance to Native American distance runners that qualify to compete in USATF sanctioned events and the Volcano Vista high school track team.
