Neither A Moment Nor A Mind To Waste – International Conference Exploring Issues Around Access to Post-Secondary Education
TORONTO, April 6 – From April 6 to 8, 2008, Toronto will host Neither A Moment Nor A Mind To Waste, a conference examining the issues around access to post secondary education. In Canada, four out of ten young Canadians do not finish high school, do not go on to post-secondary education or drop out of post-secondary studies. This conference will explore homegrown approaches as well as best practices from the United States and abroad to remedy this situation. <>
The conference will also feature 34 paper sessions over three days with presenters sharing winning strategies for lowering barriers and increasing retention from Canada, the U.S., England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, New Zealand and South Africa. Topics include: issues surrounding PSE access for indigenous populations in New Zealand and Canada, comparisons of systems in the U.S. and the U.K., a look into the challenges facing students from rural areas and adult learners, studies on encouraging persistence in science and technology education, leveraging the resources of the private sector, as well as papers describing a host of interventions and pilot programs designed to overcome financial and non-financial barriers to post-secondary education.
During the opening on April 6th and again on Tuesday April 8th, the conference will feature a best practices gallery with 28 exhibitors from Canada, the United States and Europe displaying and discussing their programs and experiences. These include Pathways to Education, Manchester Access Program, Grain Grain, University of Florida Alliance, Perspectives, Youth University, GOALS, Professor Fluffy, Future to Discover, Pathways to the Professions, L.E.A.D.S., WEST, and ESP, AESP, among others.
The Conference is presented by the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation and its partner, the European Access Network.
