Nesika Awards for Developing Respect and Understanding between Cultures
Friday, August 15, 2008
The provincial Nesika Awards is a new multicultural awards program that honours exceptional work in bringing British Columbia’s diverse cultures together.
With the unique diversity of our province’s First Nations and multicultural communities, British Columbians possess a rich and fascinating heritage. We have shared many cultural paths in the journey of building this great province.Along with ancestors who arrived as newcomers from many distant places, our province is making history today as the number of newcomers to B.C. continues to climb annually. From 2002 to 2006, over 193,000 people immigrated to our province.
More than ever, we need to recognize, honour and celebrate British Columbia’s strong cultural diversity and rich Aboriginal heritage, as we will during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
In the fall of 2008, an individual, an organization and a community will be recognized for their work in helping two or more cultures to live, learn or work together. Award recipients will be honoured for developing respect and understanding between different cultures. Their initiative sets an example for others, demonstrating the many benefits received when we live and work with each other.
If you have an outstanding initiative or know of exceptional work that is worthy of recognition, please submit a completed nomination package by Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
