New exhibit at Sherven-Smith Art Gallery – Melfort Journal

The new art exhibit at the Kerry Vickar Centre’s Sherven-Smith Art Gallery celebrates the cultural teachings and importance of the earth to the human condition while focusing on strong women who draw their strength from one another.

“I think it’s really important for the healing that needs to be done for First Nations and Métis women of Canada. I think it gives that strong image of feeling and returning to sources of strength like the earth to find that personal balance,” said Métis’ teacher, painter, filmmaker and writer, Leah Marie Dorion.

As a Métis artist, she views her heritage as providing her with a unique bridge for knowledge between all people.
Her work represents an awakening of aboriginal women to become reconnected with their roots. She believes women play a key role in passing on vital knowledge for all humanity and as such, they are the first teachers to the next generation. This is deeply reflected in her artistic practice.

The display itself features bright, vibrant colours in a pattern. It also shows symbolism of traditional arts incorporated with beadworks.
