NEW New Children, Youth, and Families Act Offers More Resources to Help Families Stay Together – VOCM

The Provincial Government has outlined details of the new Children, Youth and Families Act.

The act offers more services to keep families together—with removing the child from their family being seen as the last resort.

The new act also defines and acknowledges the uniqueness of indigenous cultures in NL while requiring a cultural connection plan for youth to maintain their culture. It also allows indigenous communities to care for children through an agreement between the department and community.

The executive director of Choices for Youth says in his role he’s seen the negative outcomes of the current child care model but the province is now heading in the right direction. Sheldon Pollett says by getting to families and children earlier, the province is building on critical legislative pieces that are needed to bring about the best outcomes for children in care.
