WHITEHORSE – A land management guide has been developed in a partnership between Yukon municipalities and the Yukon government, Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang and Association of Yukon Communities President Michelle Vainio announced.”The booklet is intended to serve as a guide for municipal development officers and government officials,” Lang said. “It will also be useful for members of the public who wish to gain a better understanding of current land management authorities and jurisdiction over land development within Yukon municipal boundaries.”

The new guide, a Summary to Land Management Authorities within Yukon Municipalities, outlines the responsible agencies and jurisdictions for the many different aspects of existing land management practices within Yukon municipalities.

It outlines municipal roles and responsibilities as related to planning, subdivision approval and development, and highlights relevant sections of Yukon’s Municipal Act and includes a section on First Nation lands within municipal boundaries.

Vainio said she is pleased with the collaboration between the association and Yukon government on this project.

“We wanted to make an effort to improve communication and foster a better understanding between the different land management authorities within Yukon municipalities,” Vainio stated. “This booklet is a great starting point that will certainly help to alleviate potential jurisdictional conflicts or misunderstandings which will, in turn, benefit members of the public who are looking for information and a way through the land use and development processes.”

The booklet is available online, at municipal offices, and Energy, Mines and Resources’ Client Services and Inspection field offices.
