New Relationship Trust Foundation Launched on June 7, 2012!
The New Relationship Trust Foundation was created by the New Relationship Trust (NRT) to create a long-term legacy for Aboriginal education advancement and First Nation language revitalization initiatives in British Columbia. Our Foundation will use its charity status to actively fundraise for Aboriginal students in British Columbia (BC) who want to achieve their education goals, and for First Nations language revitalization initiatives. Education awards are distributed to students through scholarships and bursaries annually, and a portion of each donation will be set aside to establish a Foundation endowment over the next 10 years. The launch of the New Relationship Trust Foundation took place at the magnificent Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver, BC on June 7, 2012. The event was a huge success with over 60 people attending, including a mixture of Aboriginal leaders and corporate representatives from across BC – each person signifying the importance of Aboriginal education as a top priority with their attendance and encouraging words.
The event was opened with a welcoming by Leah George-Wilson from Tsleil-Waututh Nation, followed by speeches from: NRT Chair of the Board, Kathryn Teneese from Ktunaxa Nation; Lisa Ethans from the Chief Joe Mathias British Columbia Aboriginal Scholarship Fund and New Relationship Trust Foundation Treasurer, Chief Hugh Braker of Tseshaht Nation.
Past NRT Scholarship recipient, Aaron Wilson, from Musqueam Indian Band, who recently completed his second year of law school, also gave a captivating speech about the benefit of receiving a scholarship with NRT “I have met many other recipients of NRT funding, and we all have the same thing to say: what a difference a New Relationship Trust scholarship makes. These opportunities truly contribute to our education. Whether it’s the price of tuition, expensive and heavy textbooks, or the cost of moving to or living in Vancouver, the financial assistance is invaluable”.
In the months to come, our Foundation will begin its fundraising strategy. As a part of its strategy, the following three committees will be created by the New Relationship Trust Foundation Board to assist with its endeavours: 1. Fundraising Strategy Committee; 2. Investment Committee, and; 3. Scholarship Advisory Committee. There are many challenges ahead but we are looking forward to each one!
