The mercury dumped in the English-Wabigoon river system by a nearby paper mill in the 1960s and 70s is still having serious ill effects on the health of young people and mothers on Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek (Grassy Narrows First Nation), a new report finds.
The second part of the Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek Community Health Assessment Report — compiled through a survey of 173 questions filled out for 353 Grassy Narrows youth — was released recently.
The results show eating fish from the river system — especially during pregnancy — caused health problems among the community’s young people.
Among them are mental health, emotional and behavioural problems, Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, learning disabilities, allergies, asthma, eczema or dermatitis, language or speech disorders, anxiety and/or depression, anemia, visual problems requiring glasses and ear infections.
