Northern Ontario could have two new provincial political ridings if recommendations by a provincial boundary commission are approved by the legislature this fall.
A report by the Far North Electoral Boundaries Commission recommends the creation of two ridings — Kiiwetinong and Muskegowuk, the province announced Tuesday.
Kiiwetinong, roughly north of Kenora, is to be largely indigenous-based, while Muskegowuk, in the Timmins region, is to be mainly Francophone.
If the recommendations are approved, they will boost the number of Northern Ontario-based ridings in the legislature to 13 from 11. The two new ridings are expected to be in place in time for the next provincial election, to be held next June.
