CORNER BROOK, N.L. – Newfoundland and Labrador is undertaking reconciliation initiatives today, including the announcement of a partnership to send Indigenous students from the province to the University of Saskatchewan’s law school.

Justice Minister Andrew Parsons announced the law-school initiative in Corner Brook, opening the province’s second annual Indigenous leaders roundtable.

Starting in the fall of 2019, the University of Saskatchewan’s law school will reserve two spots for Indigenous students from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Indigenous governments will play a leading role in recruiting and submitting students for the program, and the province will guarantee articling jobs for the students once they have completed the program.

Parsons was joined by Premier Dwight Ball and the University of Saskatchewan’s Dean of Law Martin Phillipson at the announcement.

Ball said other topics on the day’s agenda in Corner Brook include repatriating Beothuk remains to the province and strategies to combat mental health and addictions.
