The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) was established by the United Nations in 1966 to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960. It is observed every March 21st to bring the world community together to increase its efforts in the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination and racism (United Nations, Resolution 2142, XX1).

Nipissing University is part of the local IDERD Committee committed to the elimination of racial discrimination and racism on our campus and within our community.

North Bay is the only community in Canada who has participated consistently in the celebration of IDERD and will continue doing so this year on March 21st with a culmination of events during the Night of Applause at École secondaire catholique Algonquin.

We encourage the Nipissing community to come forward and participate in activities to commemorate IDERD by submitting entries for the following categories:

  • Students Who Make a Difference: Do you know a student who has made a positive impact on the institution? Contributed to making their community more inclusive? Shared their time to help a fellow student? The deadline is noon, February 28th.
  • Anti-Racism Poster Contest: Topic: Sharing our similarities, celebrating our differences. Poster or artwork can be in any language. Please submit with translation. Digital artwork is acceptable. The deadline is noon, February 28th.
  • Human Rights Hall of Fame: Seeking nominations for those who have shown leadership in human rights or anti-racism activities locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. The deadline is noon, March 8th.

Nominees must be a current student, staff or faculty member at Nipissing University. All submissions are to be submitted to the attention of Gemma Victor in B209.

Last year recipients from Nipissing University were: Sasha Ekomiak – Anti-Racism Poster Contest for drawing titled, Come Together, and An Nguyen – Students Who Make a Difference.

For further information please contact Gemma Victor at ext. 4098 or via email at gemmav@nipissingu.ca.
