July 25, 2017 – Toronto Ontario

Terry Fox’s brother Darrell Fox shares Metis ancestry with North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) 2017 at Closing Ceremonies in Toronto.

At the 2017 NAIG Toronto Closing Ceremonies this past weekend Darrell Fox was able to share the families indigenous history with young athletes from all over Canada and the United States. Specifically, NAIG closing ceremony attendees were able to hear how Terry Fox’s grandmother Marian Gladue’s Metis family history is well connected to both the iconic bison hunters of the plains and to the 1869-70 government of Louis Riel, the founder of the province of Manitoba.

“The Fox family is very proud of our Metis heritage and I was so happy to be in the presence of all these amazing young indigenous athletes” said Darrell, “Terry wanted everyone to see him as an athlete with a spirit that would not quit, he truly hoped his run would inspire others to dream big”.

“At the games I could see that sport is alive and well in our Indigenous Communities, and I call upon all to continue the fight against cancer and support Terry’s dream. Activate your Nation and home communities and please participate in the annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 17th

Metis Nation British Columbia’s Minister responsible for Sport Michael Dumont, who also attended the Games said, “We want everyone to know Terry Fox and his family are Metis. What an amazing inspiration to our youth and to Metis, First Nations and Inuit people in Canada and truly Indigenous people everywhere to know that Canada’s National Hero, Terry Fox is in fact Indigenous”

A video sharing the Fox Family heritage was shown at the NAIG Closing Ceremonies on Saturday, July 22nd, 2017
