TIMMINS, ON: Northern College Board of Governors is pleased to announce the members of its newly-elected 2018 – 2019 Board of Governors Executive Committee. This year’s four-person Executive Committee is comprised of Board Chair George Pirie, First Vice-Chair Doug Walsh, Second Vice-Chair Domenic Rizzuto and Carly Stringer, Governor at Large.

“Northern College is very fortunate to attract the caliber of individuals who volunteer their time and energies that contribute to the growth and progressive nature of our college,” says Dr. Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “In addition to the invaluable private and public sector skills and experience each brings to the Board of Governors, this year’s Executive Committee has 10 years of combined service on the Board of Governors,” said Gibbons.

George Pirie has worked in an executive capacity in the mining industry for over 18 years. He has experience in finance, operations, asset optimization, and strategic, corporate and business development. He brings to the Board of Governors his strong ties to the local, national and international mining community.

Doug Walsh is currently the Director of Public Works for the City of Temiskaming Shores where his combined 18 years of municipal service within the City and region equips him with an important appreciation of the needs for training and education in the college’s most southern region.

Domenic Rizzuto serves as the Human Resources Manager at Goldcorp Canada Ltd., Porcupine Gold Mines. His 30 years of experience in labour relations and corporate social responsibility has helped ensure a balanced perspective in the creation of Board governance policies.

Carly Stringer is the principal practicing lawyer at Stringer Law, located in Timmins, focusing on employment, commercial and governance law.

“Our board looks forward to working with our new governors in the coming year,” says George Pirie, Chair of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Board of Governors. “One of our main priorities will be to find ways, as is the case with other colleges in the north, to increase domestic student enrolment at our four campuses. While we have seen tremendous growth in international student enrolment and a stable Indigenous student population, our greatest challenge, one precipitated by the declining demographics of northern and rural Ontario, is to attract more domestic students.”

The 2018 – 2019 Board of Governors and Executive Committee officially assume their duties on, Tuesday, September 4, 2018, and will hold their first meeting on Friday, September 14, 2018.
