Northern Elite football camp inspires Indigenous youth – Fort McMurray Today

There was plenty of passing, throwing, running and catching at Northern Elite’s free Indigenous youth football camp this past weekend.

But most importantly, it was an opportunity to build confidence in more than 50 young athletes attending the two-day camp at Shell Place.

“Football is just the avenue… but this is about prepping them for life.” said co-organizer Kwami Osei. “They’re going to leave here with a powerful message that hopefully will grow in time.”

The camp is open to all Indigenous youth in Wood Buffalo. This is the camp’s second year. Northern Elite has run football camps since in 2014, but Osei said an Indigenous camp was created after organizers noticed Indigenous youth often kept to themselves or did not show up for the second day.
