Northern New Democrats Challenge Flaherty over HST for First Nations
14 May, 2010
Charlie Angus has written to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty challenging the federal government over the HST. Angus and fellow New Democrats are calling on the government to honour its commitments to Canada’s First Nations by re-instating the point of sale exemption.“This government is ignoring basic treaty commitments. The government made no effort to consult with Treaty Status First Nations over the HST.”
Angus says Steven Harper promised to forge new relationships with First Nations people.
“This government is showing how little it respects First Nations by imposing the HST on First Nation families.”
Angus is calling on the Tories to immediately arrange a meeting with First Nations to rectify the problems regarding the point of sale exemption.
“If the federal government truly wants a new relationship, then its time to sit down and meet. We would gladly help arrange such a meeting.”
