AS if the death of an indigenous youth and the disappearance of another isn’t bad enough, a war of words has erupted between First Nations representatives and the police over the adequacy of police investigations.
Every person who is witnessing these two cases play out cannot help but feel immense sympathy for the parents and families of these two young people. Caught between conflicting claims and counter-claims, they must endure the pain of doubt alongside the pain of loss.
Families should at least be able to feel confident that everything possible is being done to find out what happened to Tammy Keeash, whose body was found in the Thunder Bay floodway May 7, and to Josiah Begg who went missing a day earlier while visiting the city. The families cannot feel this comfort because police (and the coroner’s office) are under attack from Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the chiefs of the youths’ home First Nations who expressed an utter lack of confidence in the two police investigations. Now is not the time.
