NS Government: 200th Anniversary of Province House Celebrated at Official Ceremony
February 11, 2019
Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc, together with Premier Stephen McNeil and House of Assembly Speaker Kevin Murphy, commemorated the 200th anniversary of Province House in Halifax today, Feb. 11, during an official ceremony in the legislative chamber.
“As speaker and elected member of the House of Assembly, the 200thanniversary of Province House is especially impactful,” said Mr. Murphy. “This occasion is the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors to Nova Scotia alike to feel more connected to this province – much of it which was built in this historic building.”
On Feb. 11, 1819, Province House was officially opened by Lord Dalhousie. It is the oldest legislative building in Canada.
“So much of the Nova Scotia we know today was shaped through the debates and legislation within these walls over the last 200 years,” said Premier McNeil. “Province House is a central piece of our heritage, where history will continue to be made for many years to come.”
In addition to a Mi’kmaq smudging ceremony and official messages and addresses, there were performances by pianist Diana Torbert and cellist Shimon Walt, along with the specially commissioned Fanfare for Province House played by members of the Stadacona Band. Actors Jeremy Webb and Jamie Bradley also performed a vignette that brought the history of Province House to real life.
