Nunavut land referendum on May 9
Start Date: May 3, 2016
End Date: May 9, 2016
Nunavut-wide 45 sec
Nunavummiut will vote in a territory-wide land referendum on May 9, 2016, in accordance with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
The outcome of the referendum will determine if municipalities can sell municipal lands. A “yes” vote will make it possible for a municipality to sell municipal land. A “no” vote will mean that a municipality will continue to own and lease the land. Each community in Nunavut will vote independently.
The referendum vote does not affect Inuit-owned lands. The use of municipal lands, whether sold or leased, will remain under the authority of the municipalities.
Remember, if you don’t vote, you won’t have any say in the matter.
