Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Accepting Applications for Kakiniit Grants

(April 11, 2008 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak and Premier Paul Okalik today announced that application forms for the 2008 Kakiniit Grants are now available.The grants program awards $1,000 to five students seeking to improve their cultural or traditional skills and $1,000 to five students enrolled in academic training at a postsecondary institution. Only Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) are eligible for the scholarship programs.

“NTI and the Government of Nunavut launched this program last year to encourage and assist students with their cultural and academic learning initiatives,” said Kaludjak. “We are proud to support Inuit cultural and academic studies, and look forward to providing funding for students who are practicing, promoting, and carrying on our traditions.”

“We are pleased to be working with NTI on the Kakiniit Grant program,” said Premier Okalik. “The Government of Nunavut is very proud to be supporting Inuit who will be contributing to the cultural and economic sustainability of Nunavut.”

The Kakiniit Grants program was launched July 9, 2007 as part of the Nunavut Day celebrations. The names of successful recipients will be announced this Nunavut Day during the celebrations in Iqaluit.

Completed application forms are due Friday, May 30, 2008 by 5 p.m. EDT. Application forms are available at www.tunngavik.com or by calling 1-888-646-0006.
