Press Release – For Immediate Release
Ottawa, ON (December 2, 2011)
– NWAC commemorates and recognizes December 6th as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day also marks the 22nd anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. “The nation was profoundly affected by the senseless violence against these 14 women and we are proud to honour them this Tuesday” said Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.NWAC is part of the greater movement to end violence against women. Many Canadians do not know that Aboriginal women are 3.5 times more likely to experience violence and are eight times more likely to be victims of spousal homicide than non-Aboriginal women. Aboriginal women continue to be the most at risk group in Canada for issues related to violence, and complex issues linked to intergenerational impacts of colonization and residential schools.

Today, there are nearly 600 missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada. NWAC’s Evidence to Action Initiative offers supports to Aboriginal families and communities who have been affected by violence and are committed to ending violence against Aboriginal women and girls.Download PDF Press Release.
