Ontario Investing in Kenora Urban Indigenous Infrastructure
Funding will support a renovation at the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre
November 8, 2019
KENORA — Ontario’s government is supporting Indigenous communities by investing in economic capital projects that support skills training and economic development.
Today, the province announced funding for the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre in Kenora through the Indigenous Community Capital Grants Program. Ontario is providing more than $175,000 to support renovations at the downtown Friendship Centre, which serves as a hub for urban Indigenous cultural programming and community events in the Kenora area.
Renovations will include repairs to the building foundation and concrete ramp, flooring installation and other facility upgrades to improve day-to-day use.
“Supporting renovations of cultural facilities like the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre in Northern Ontario promotes cultural diversity and contributes to improving the quality of life of Northerners,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs. “We are proud to support Indigenous culture here in Kenora and throughout our province.”
“This investment from Ontario will allow our Friendship Centre to make the renovations we need to best serve our clients,” said Patti Fairfield, Executive Director of the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre. “We’re a very busy Centre and these updates mean we can continue to provide a wide-range of programing that meets the needs of the urban Indigenous community in Kenora, from youth to Elders.”
Creating opportunities for Indigenous people to achieve personal, professional and financial success is part of Ontario’s commitment to creating a better future for all Ontarians.
- The Indigenous Community Capital Grants Program funds the development of community capital projects that contribute to a sustainable social base and support economic participation in Indigenous communities, both on and off reserve.
