(Toronto, November 2, 2018) On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, we offer our deepest condolences to the community of Wiikwemkoong and the family of Andrew; we remember his leadership and his commitment to the betterment of his community.  As a decorated war veteran receiving the Defence Medal, Volunteer Medal, Italy Medal, France Medal, the England Medal, and most recently the Jubilee Medal, we’re all grateful for his bravery and service and we’ll keep Andrew in our thoughts and prayers this year on November 11.

Andrew Manitowabi was a proud leader and a dedicated WWII veteran who always put the community of Wiikwemkoong first. Andrew opened the famous Andy’s in 1966 out of his home in Wiikwemkoong – he created a business that would provide local goods to the community, as well as provide community members with employment – and soon thereafter, advocated and initiated plans for the Wiikwemkoong Nursing Home. He was also a respected elder and served on council for a number of years.

“Our hearts go out to the community of Wiikwemkoong and the family of Andrew and I would like to wish him well on his journey to the spirit world on behalf of the Chiefs in Ontario,” said Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald.

Andrew will be resting at the Wiikwemkoong Recreation and Cultural Centre from November 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Funeral Services at the Holy Cross Parish in Wiikwemkoong, Ontario on Saturday November 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
