OSHAWA — Oshawa council has decided to rename Squaw Valley Court after the city received concerns about the negative and offensive connotation of the name toward the Indigenous community.

The street will be renamed Revelstoke Court, which is in-line with a ski resort theme for streets in the area.

A staff report on the issue stated that concerns have been raised about the term “squaw,” which is part of the name of the eight-home street in the Thornton Road and Rossland Road West area of Oshawa along the Whitby boarder.

The street name was implemented in 1994 and was one of several street names in the subdivision following the theme of North American ski resorts. Other examples include Deer Valley Drive, Sundance Circle, Killington Street and Snowbird Street.
