The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council) aims to increase access and participation in sports, recreation, and physical activity for Aboriginal people across BC.
In 2008, at a historical gathering of Aboriginal leaders, a five-pillar sport, recreation and physical activity framework was presented and endorsed as a means of improving the health of First Nations, Métis, and off-reserve Aboriginal peoples in BC.
The group that developed and presented the framework, which included the First Nations Health Council, Métis Nation BC, and the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, formalized their partnership by creating the Partners Council. With the endorsement of the Pillar Framework by the First Nations, Métis and Friendship Centres leadership, the Partners Council proceeded to develop a comprehensive plan, now known as the Aboriginal Sports, Recreation and Physical Activity Strategy (BC).
