Peterborough area Indigenous women pressure feds to end sex discrimination in Indian Act – Peterborough Examiner

The United Nations ruling for Canada to remove sex discrimination in the Indian Act must be implemented, local Indigenous rights activists said Monday.

Indigenous women and their allies gathered at Emmanuel West United Church to ask citizens to support and promote the UN’s decision.

In January, the UN ruled that Canada must grant equity to Indigenous women and give them the same Indigenous status as men through the Indian Act.

When the act was introduced, Indigenous men could marry non-Indigenous women and their wives and children would get status. But if an Indigenous woman married a non-Indigenous man, she lost her status and her kids would never see it.
