Pic Mobert FN: Aboriginal Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program
The Aboriginal Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program (APATP) is in its second year of operation and recruits twelve Aboriginal people throughout the province of Ontario. The cost of training and room and board is covered by the province of Ontario and the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 793.
The Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO) delivers the training and designed the program to address the training needs of Aboriginal peoples and the heavy equipment operator industry. The APATP includes eleven weeks of training at the Morrisburg campus and an eight week placement with a signatory contractor to the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 793.
A Self-Assessment Tool was designed to support the selection of candidates for the heavy equipment operator training opportunities. This tool is intended to assist Aboriginal people acquire a better understanding of the heavy equipment operator industry. The expectation is for both the Aboriginal Skills Employment and Agreement (ASETA) holder official to become familiar with the tool and the Aboriginal client to complete the self-assessment. It is believed that once this is done, both individuals will be in a better position to make a decision.
Officials from both the OETIO and IUOE Local 793 are prepared to work with both the Aboriginal client and ASETA holder official should they be asked. The Self-Assessment Tool will enhance the selection process given the investment in a heavy equipment operator is very expensive. We are suggesting this as a strategy for a specific career as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
