Plan Nord: An Opportunity for Jean Charest to Establish a New and Respectful Relationship with First Nations
WENDAKE, QC, Sept. 29 – For First Nations, the respect of their rights, the settlement of their land claims and their active participation in the development of their territory, these are all conditions that are essential to the success of the Plan Nord, being put forward by Jean Charest.Following the announcement by Jean Charest to the general council of his party this weekend in Lévis, the Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard, made the following statement: “The Plan Nord must mark the end of the exclusionary policy that the governments of Canada and Quebec impose on the First Nations, exclusion from governance over the territory, exclusion from the economic development, exclusion from the Employment Pact, etc. Jean Charest now has a chance to make a difference, to turn talk into action, to put an end to the colonialist attitude which still prevails in the relationship with the First Nations. We will no longer be ignored”, stated Chief Picard.
The Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is the regional organization regrouping the Chiefs of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.
