Poverty input ignored
Re “Behind closed doors” (May 6) –

Before 1995 welfare payments in Ontario were barely adequate. When Mike Harris came into power, he slashed those benefits by 21.6 per cent, so that people no longer had enough money to cover even food and shelter. Thirteen years later, that pittance has been further eroded by inflation, and it is estimated that a 40-per-cent increase is needed to get back to where we were. The McGuinty government has given a mere five per cent increase in two stages, while expressing active concern about poverty levels in Ontario.
