Premier Floyd Roland Congratulates Nellie Cournoyea on the Awarding of the Governor General’s Northern Medal
YELLOWKNIFE (April 15, 2008) – On behalf of the people of the Northwest Territories, Premier Floyd Roland, congratulates Nellie Cournoyea on receiving the Governor General’s Northern Medal.“Ms. Cournoyea has made an enormous contribution to the North throughout her career,” Premier Roland said. “Her work as Premier of the Northwest Territories and through organizations such as the Committee for Original Peoples’ Entitlement and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation has helped to draw national and international attention to the rights of Aboriginal peoples and to the Northwest Territories as a vital part of Canada. I am pleased that Ms. Cournoyea is being recognized today for her efforts on behalf of her people and all residents of the Northwest Territories.”
The Governor General’s Northern Medal was created in 2005 and is awarded each year to a citizen whose actions and achievements have contributed to the evolution and constant reaffirmation of the Canadian North as part of our national identity. The Medal will be presented to Ms. Cournoyea by Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëllle Jean, Governor General of Canada in a ceremony today in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
