PRINCE GEORGE – The North’s exceptional BC Public Service employees were the focus of a ceremony this evening hosted by Premier Gordon Campbell, where they received Premier’s Innovation and Excellence Awards acknowledging their creativity and dedication.“British Columbians are proud to have a public service that fosters the kind of innovation and creativity we see in these award winners and throughout the North,” said Premier Campbell. “These awards are an important opportunity for us to recognize public service employees who demonstrate excellence in delivering the vital services that contribute so much to our quality of life.”
This year, employees from the North region received awards in the Service Excellence, Cross-Government Integration and Partnership categories for a total of one gold, one silver, three bronze awards and five honourable mentions.
“British Columbians are fortunate to have people of such high calibre choose the BC Public Service to apply their talents,” said Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development. “The provincial government is ensuring we’re able to attract the best people to deliver the public services we all rely on.”
The ministries of Transportation and Infrastructure, and Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources received a gold award for their collaboration on the successful heartlands oil and gas road rehabilitation strategy. The two ministries worked together to identify and upgrade key roadways in the northeast to encourage further oil and gas development that would contribute to strong economic growth in the region and increase government royalties. The strategy has been successful, with over 185 new gas wells being drilled off of the 31 upgraded roads, and the improved roads are also a significant benefit to local residents.
The annual awards represent the BC Public Service’s pinnacle recognition event to highlight and acknowledge Cross-Government Integration, Innovation, Leadership, Legacy, Organizational Excellence, Partnership and Service Excellence across the province.
Similar events are being held to honour Vancouver Island, Interior and Lower Mainland employees, with the final event being a provincial award ceremony.
The BC Public Service is the province’s largest corporate employer and was recently selected as one of the top 50 employers in B.C. for 2009. To learn more about the opportunities available in the BC Public Service visit http://employment.gov.bc.ca/ online.
