When Dakota Ray Hebert started working on her new play, Native Studies 101, she asked her young performers a simple question.
“What are some of the things you wish you could tell your teachers?” Hebert said. “I think a lot of Indigenous youth keep quiet … because they don’t want to be labelled a problem student.”
Hebert, who has enjoyed a great deal of success as a performer on the local and national stage, is making her first foray into the directing world with her new self-written show. Native Studies 101 is a comedy that pokes fun at the idea of a settler instructor giving Native Studies classes to a group of Indigenous students who know the subject matter a lot better than the teacher.
