Recognizing individuals who are committed to children’s early years

Edmonton… Ten of the most extraordinary and innovative child care professionals in Alberta were recognized for their outstanding contributions at a gala awards event in Edmonton on May 10.”This provincial awards program brings to light the significant contributions thousands of child care workers make to the lives of children each and every day,” said Janis Tarchuk, Minister of Children’s Services. “It also gives us a perfect opportunity to say thank you to the many staff that go the extra mile to make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families.”

Nominations for the 2007 Alberta Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence were submitted by parents and child care operators from across the province. Forty finalists, representing urban and rural child care programs, were chosen by a committee of representatives from the child care community. From these finalists, the selection committee chose 10 award recipients.

In selecting the award recipients, the selection committee looked for specific examples of innovation and creativity in a variety of areas, including how nominees support children’s development and well-being, celebrate diversity and nurture the individuality of each child. Other factors reviewed were how nominees engaged parents and families and raised the profile of the child care profession.

Each award recipient received a commemorative pin, award certificate and sponsor gifts in recognition of the contributions they make to child care. The awards are presented by Children’s Services with support from ACCESS Television, the Edmonton Journal, the Calgary Herald, Kedros Furniture – a division of the Excel Society, Marvel College, Wintergreen Learning and the Delta Hotel.

Ensuring Albertans have access to quality, affordable child care options is part of Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to improve Albertans’ quality of life. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, build a stronger Alberta and provide safe and secure communities.
