Major Community Facilities Program helps with expansion of interpretive centre
Calgary… The Alberta government is contributing $4 million to preserve Calgary’s history through renovations to Fort Calgary’s Interpretive Centre.A grant from the Major Community Facilities Program will help Fort Calgary expand the interpretive centre which includes developing a new gallery and exhibits, children’s library, educational space, and meeting rooms.
“Facilities like Fort Calgary give us a look into ourselves – into our past, where we are now, and where we could be going,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “Preserving and protecting our history is one of the key goals of our province’s cultural policy: The Spirit of Alberta.”
The renovations and additions will enhance Fort Calgary and better enable residents and visitors to honour Alberta’s western heritage.
“Alberta has such a unique and diverse history, it’s great that facilities such as Fort Calgary are in place so our history is not forgotten,” said Wayne Cao, MLA for Calgary-Fort. “These renovations will provide new experiences and knowledge to visitors and will add to our community spirit.”
Funds for the centre are being provided as part of the Alberta government’s Major Community Facilities Program. Started in 2007-08, this two-year $280-million lottery-funded program helps municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Aboriginal communities plan, upgrade or build major public-use facilities that enhance community life.
