Public Notice: An opportunity to express your views on Laws before the Legislative Assembly
The Standing Committee on Social Programs is holding a series of public meetings throughout the NWT to seek input on several proposed pieces of legislation.
Bill 4 – Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment
Bill 5 – An Act to Amend the Maintenance Orders Enforcement Act
This Bill includes new enforcement tools for child support and other maintenance orders. These tools include suspending or putting conditions on a debtor’s driver’s license, and registering the order against real property owned by the debtor so that the order can be enforced in the same way as a mortgage.Bill 6 – An Act to Amend the Residential Tenancies Act
This Bill includes updates to the Act, and a number of changes to streamline the rental officer’s processes.
Bill 7 – Securities Act
This Bill modernizes the framework for trading securities in the Northwest Territories, and harmonized it with legislation in other parts of Canada. The purpose of the Act is to protect investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, and to foster fair and efficient capital markets, and confidence in those markets.
