IQALUIT, QC, April 15, 2019 – Qaggiavuut Chairperson Rhoda Ungalaq made the statement below following the Government of Canada’s Creative Export Canada funding announcement.

“Qaggiavuut thanks the Government of Canada for investing into Inuit performing arts through the Department of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism’s Creative Export Canada program. We are proud to be among the first 20 funding recipients to help export Canadian and Indigenous culture abroad.

Qaggiavuut is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening, promoting, advocating and creating space for Inuit performing artists. As part of our work, Qaggiavuut created two original Inuit productions, including Kiviuq Returns, an Inuktitut theatre production which performed to sold-out audiences throughout Canada and Greenland this year and Arctic Song, a music production based in traditional Inuit songs that is booking performances at world music festivals in the United States and Europe. Both productions feature Inuit cast and crew from across Canada’s Arctic, providing opportunities to train and create sustainable careers in the arts.

Thanks to CEC funding, Qaggiavuut will be able to strengthen global partnerships, promote Inuit productions to international audiences and increase awareness of both Inuit culture and Canadian performing arts.

This funding comes at a critical time and shines a spotlight on the important need to build Qaggiq, a performing arts and cultural hub in Nunavut–the only province/territory without one. Ongoing support from the Government of Canada is critical to the vitality of Indigenous languages and helps make Canada’s Arctic a destination for cultural tourism while increasing Inuit arts exports globally.”
