Inugaguligait – Little People
Lino cut print on paper
16 x 19 in; 40.6 x 48.3 cm
An Inuit legend passed down from generation to generation and told to Quppa Jaw by her mother was the inspiration for this winning piece.According to a traditional story, the Inugaguligait, or the Little People, lived in the same manner as the Inuit, but were very aggressive. If the Inugaguligait should find an Inuit hunter alone they would attack and whoever reached the top of the hunter’s head first would suffocate him to death. Quppa remembers her mother telling this story when she was growing up, and she wanted to capture it as part of her experimentation with the technique of lino cut printing.
Quppa’s visual narrative portrays a tale of an Inuit hunter waiting for geese when he is suddenly attacked by the Inugaguligait. The drama of the scene is heightened by the suspense we feel when we realize that members of the hunter’s family are either gathering eggs near the rocks or looking for berries in the distance, unaware that the Inugaguligait are in their midst.
Quppa plans to continue her art practice designing prints and jewellery.
