Rama chief has concerns with new act – Orillia Packet

Chippewas of Rama First Nation is cautiously optimistic about the federal government’s new deal on native education, but fears old attitudes have not disappeared.

The new First Nations Control of First Nations Act tabled in the House of Commons Tuesday promises $1.25 billion in funding over three years beginning in 2016.

The new act was rewritten from an earlier version with more consultation with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). It removes the cap on education funding, provides an escalation of funds and money for capital spending.

It also requires a student officer auditor.

“It reminds all of us of the old Indian agent days. I’m totally in disagreement with that,” said Rama Chief Sharon Stinson Henry.
