Referendum on the creation of the Nunavik Regional Government – the majority is NOT: The final agreement is rejected

Quebec City, April 27, 2011 – In Nunavik, the Regional Director of the referendum, Mr. Adams Padlayat announces that after the poll held today, a majority of voters and of voters voted against the final agreement on the establishment of a regional government. Of 4242 votes cast, 2,842 or 66% are in favor of NO to the following question:

“Do you approve the final Agreement on the establishment of Nunavik Regional Government? ”

Preliminary results show that 1400 voters, 34% responded YES to this question. NO was the majority in all 14 villages of Nunavik, as well as among the voters who voted outside the territory. In total, 54.5% of registered voters on the referendum list have exercised their right to vote.The approval of the agreement was conditional upon a majority vote in the referendum is in favor of the Agreement and that such majority represents at least 25% plus one of all eligible voters.

The qualified voters living in 14 villages of the territory and the Inuit beneficiaries of the Convention of the James Bay and Northern Quebec who reside outside of Nunavik were eligible to vote in this referendum. In all, there are 7,881 people who could pronounce.

Recall that the final Agreement on the establishment of Nunavik Regional Government has been reached between the federal government, the Quebec government and Makivik, which represents the interests of Inuit beneficiaries of the Convention of the James Bay and Northern Quebec . It provided particular the merger of three important agencies of Nunavik, Kativik Regional Government (KRG administration supramunicipal the region), the Kativik School Board (KSB) and the Regional Health and Social Services (NRBHSS).
