Wednesday September 26th 2007 – News Release

The City of Regina and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) proudly welcome delegates from the North American Indigenous Games Council arriving today for a site inspection in preparation for the 2011 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).

The four delegates will spend two days touring Regina’s recreational facilities in order to assess the city’s capacity to host the upcoming Games which will bring 5,000 athletes, managers and mission staff from all over North America.“Regina is the ideal venue for these games,” said Mayor Pat Fiacco. “Our superior recreation facilities, successful experience hosting the 2005 Canada Summer Games and strong tradition of volunteerism are second to none.”

FSIN Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish said, “Regina is the perfect size to host the North American Indigenous Games. Like the Canada Summer Games in 2005, residents of Regina will make these games their own and volunteer their time. Saskatchewan has the leadership and professional staff to ensure we take care of the youth from all over North America.”

Regina’s bid committee includes the FSIN, the City of Regina, Tourism Regina, Casino Regina, First Nations University of Canada, and SaskSport.

The site evaluation team will go through an evaluation process and report to the NAIG Council on November 3-5, 2007. The visiting delegates are Alex Nelson, President of the NAIG Council of British Columbia; Robert Roybal, Vice President NAIG Council of Colorado; Harold Joseph of Washington; and Norman Ettawacappo, a technician from Manitoba.

Saskatchewan representatives will make their final presentation at this meeting and a NAIG Council vote will follow. The official host of the 2011 NAIG will be announced on November 5, 2007 in Duncan, BC.
