(Toronto, November 10, 2017) On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, I congratulate the family of the late Gaylord Powless upon his induction yesterday into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Powless was arguably the best lacrosse player in the world when he played from the 1960s to 1980s. At the age of 17, he won the Tom Longboat Award as the best First Nation athlete in Canada. Powless also led numerous teams to amateur and professional championships during his career.

Lacrosse is known as “the Creator’s Game” as it is a gift from the Creator for his enjoyment and as a medicine game for healing the people. According to the Iroquois National team, at the beginning of each season players will ask the spirit of an animal for guidance so that he may have the eyes of the Hawk, and the agility of the Deer. There is often a blessing where sacred tobacco is placed into the fire so that the smoke will rise, carrying this message to the land of “the Creator.

There is no doubt that the spirit of Gaylord Powless lives on in all lacrosse athletes, especially those from Six Nations and the Haudenosaunee. Sports has been an important aspect of daily life for many First Nation men, women, and youth who have excelled in hockey, basketball, football, and all other mainstream sports.

With the induction of Gaylord Powless, all Canadians will be reminded that lacrosse has so much significance for our Peoples and it truly is the Creator’s Game and gift to the sporting world.
